“My Kinky Shadow: The poetics of the sadomasochistic Other” by Douglas Thomas PhD LCSW

Kink Knowledgeable is delighted to announce Dr. Douglas Thomas, a depth psychologist, has joined our faculty.  Dr. Thomas recently presented the first kink positive paper on sadomasochism from a Jungian lens at the International Association for Jungian Studies (IAJS) Conference in Cape Town, South Africa in July.

In his paper he challenges the Jungian orthodoxy by saying:. . .

“what arouses curiosity from a Jungian perspective is the pronounced tendency to pathologize, marginalize, and ignore the kinks that come into the consulting room with patients. If a patient were to share a dream involving imprisonment in a dungeon, or tying a beautiful youth to a tree, a Jungian analyst would likely greet these images with enthusiasm, noticing the dynamic archetypal themes on display. Are the mythopoetic elements of these images any less vital when they appear as part of a couple’s consensual sex play?”

And he goes on to construct a Jungian hypothesis which is both sex and kink positive and provides a new paradigm for revisioning the psychodynamics of BDSM.

Here he is explaining in his own words why he felt called to give this paper and his key themes.

You can read his ground breaking speech here.
